Seminar “Elementary Particle Physics” in Niš

February 20th, 2019 No comments

On Monday, 25 February 2019, at the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics, Unibersity of Niš, Serbia, dr Maciej Trzebiński (Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences, Krakow, Poland ) will give a seminar

Elementary Particle Physics
Journey to the Innards of Our Universe

The seminar will be held at the amphitheater (no. 10) at the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics, starting at 17:00. The similar seminar will be given in Novi Sad.

Abstract: During the seminar we will briefly discuss the most fundamental questions: what is the Universe made of?, what are the rules guiding its evolution?, what are its origins?, and what is its destiny? Our journey will start from a brief description of tools used for such studies: particle accelerators and detectors. On example of the Higgs boson discovery, I will explain how new particles can be observed. Then, I will sum up our current best knowledge about the most basic structure of Universe. Finally, I will list some, still unanswered, questions.

The third Seminar in the CERN – SEENET-MTP PhD Training Program

November 6th, 2016 No comments

The third seminar in the CERN – SEENET-MTP PhD training Program will be held in Timisoara, Romania. from December 11th (arrival) to December 17th (departure) 2016. The program was launched in 2015 with a generous support of CERN.

This Timisoara – 2016 event, titled Computational methods in Cosmology and General Relativity, is mainly intended for PhD students who study High Energy Physics and related fields. The topics of the school cover modern aspects in General Relativity in Cosmology, including numerical and analytical methods.

More information about the Seminar in Timisoara can be found here or in The first announcement (PDF). About origin of the Program see here, and about the two previous Schools see here (Belgrade and Bucharest).

SEENET-MTP mourns the passing of Prof. Dr. Ioannis Bakas

Bakas_IoannisWith great sadness, we share the news of the passing of Ioannis Bakas (National Technical University in Athens, Greece), due to heart failure as a consequence of his treatment.

Prof. Ioannis will always be remembered for his fundamental contributions to string theory.

He was a prominent member of the SEENET-MTP Network.

We will keep memory on him.

Guido Altarelli, Italian theoretical physicist, died at 74

AtarelliGGuido Altarelli was born on July 12, 1941. Guido graduated in Physics from Rome University in 1963. In 1987-2006 Guido was a Senior Staff Physicist at the Theory Division of CERN, and was Theory Division Leader from 2000-04.

Just after Julius Wess, he was among the very first great physicists who supported physicists from former Yugoslavia, contributed in establishing and “start-up” of the Southeastern European Network in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics, and its Scientific Committee.

At CERN he had a leading role in the preparation of LEP and the LHC and in the theoretical analysis of the experimental results.

His best known contribution, obtained with Giorgio Parisi in 1977, is the derivation of the QCD evolution equations for parton densities, known as the Altarelli-Parisi or DGLAP equations.

Guido Altarelli died at age 74 on September 30, 2015.

We will keep memory on him.
